How to read your meter

Imperial Meter

It is an old style meter. It will probably have the words ‘cubic feet’, or the letters ‘Ft’ shown somewhere on the front. It measures gas in cubic feet.Write down the four numbers from left to right. Ignore any numbers shown in red.

Metric Meter

It is a newer type meter, It will probably say it measures gas in ‘cubic meters’, or will have the letter ‘M’ on the front. Write down all the numbers before the decimal point, left to right. Ignore any numbers after the decimal point (which may be shown in red).

Dial meter

This type of gas meter shows a series of clock style dials with numbers from zero to nine. If the pointer is between two numbers, record the lower of the two. However, if the pointer is between nine and zero, record it as nine. Ignore any red dials.

Calculating gas use

Subtract your current gas meter reading from your previous reading to work out how many cubic meters or feet you have used. All energy bills are priced in kilowatt Hours (kWh). The formula for converting cubic measurements to kWh is as follows:

If your measure is in cubic meter:

(The number of units used) X (The volume correction factor) X (The clorific value) divided by 3.6 = kWh’s. You will find the volume correction factor and calorific value in the small print of your bill.

If your measure is in cubic feet:

you just need to convert it into meters first. To do so you have to multiply it by the metric conversion factor, that is: 2.83. The rest of the formula remains the same as above.
